Park Acoustics this weekend! ⛱⛰
Check out the interview here.
Out of the big smoke of Johannesburg comes a young, creative and passionate DJ. Headphase has developed and refined a sound which he shares throughout South Africa’s club, festival and radio circuit.
Influenced by the UK Garage movement and the world of underground electronic music, Headphase has developed a sound which goes against the grain in a surprisingly pleasant way, that is guaranteed to make you move. Priding himself on underground music and cutting edge sounds, be sure to arrive with an open mind to hear something new and exciting.
2011 saw Headphase explode onto the club scene in Cape Town with his unique style and energetic performance, sharing the stage with many of SA’s choice electronic acts such as Haezer, Sibot, Das Kapital, Pascal & Pearce, Niskerone, Goldfish, Dean Fuel and many more. 2012-2014 expanded this trend as Headphase explored and shared the sound that he endorses on the festival front at festivals such as Rocking The Daisies, Earthdance, Synergy, Rezonance, RAMfest and One World, as well as on the airwaves through 5FM, Assembly Radio, MuthaFM and UCT Radio. 2015-2016 has seen Headphase move back to Johannesburg and mature as a DJ, as he continues to take all listeners on an open-minded exploration of his sound. He has made his mark as a resident of the Hot On Top crew, playing to crowds at some of Joburg’s finest rooftop and outdoor venues.
We caught up with him for a short chat, this is what he has to say:
MA: Hey dude, rad to be chatting to you. How you doing today?
Hey Mixed Apples, I’m great! Thanks for the chat.
MA: Lets get started with a quick 101 on who Headphase is? Where in SA are you from and how did you get started in the music scene?
My name is Tim and I play music as Headphase. I grew up in Joburg, but established myself in the Cape Town club and festival circuit in my formative DJ years, before moving back to Joburg a few years ago. Music has been close to me for many years, I played drums in a number of Jazz, Alternative Rock and Indie bands at school, stayed close to music theory and have always been a collector of electronic music of many different types. I guess all of these things lead me to where I am today musically.
MA: What are some of your musical influences?
The UK Garage movement of the early 90’s has always been a major source of inspiration for me. In recent years, there have been a number of revivals of the sound in different shapes and forms, which you can hear in a lot of the House and Techno music that I play.
MA: Do you dabble in music production at all?
I wish I had more time to! Occasionally I thread together a few loops and samples or have a jam session with friends from my old bands. Working in corporate during the week keeps me pretty busy though.
Our electronic music scene in SA is certainly a thing of beauty. I’m inspired by the constant surge of DJ’s, live acts, producers, promoters, venues, festivals and bookers – particularly many of the emerging youngsters. What I would like to see more of, though, is collaboration between these different people and the inherent ‘cliques’ that tend to emerge. I feel that this will move us closer to a true South African cross-pollination of music and music lovers.
MA: Any acts/bands/artists that you think need a special mention?
As always, a shout out to my Hot On Top family of residents and friends who always deliver the good vibes – Abby Nurock, OG Chocolate, Alex Dalais, Carly, Miki San, Ang, Bombardier and Big Foot. We have also booked some stand-out headliners at Hot On Top recently, so thank you Floyd Lavine, Ryan Murgatroyd, Lady M, B-Type, Bruce Loko, Trancemicsoul, The Kiffness, Moonchild Sanelly, Stone-Age Citizens and so many more.
Finally, some crew love to the other brands we love working with: We Love Summer and Paradise City in CPT, David & Goliath and King of the Communes in PTA.
MA: You will be playing at Park Acoustics event this month…. Are you excited for the gig? What can we expect from your set?
Very excited! This will be my 2nd Park Acoustics and I look forward to bringing some fun, groovy, dancey House and Disco music to close out proceedings. Any excuse to visit PTA to share some tunes and a beer is a good excuse 😉
MA: Anything else you currently working on that we may be interested in?
Yes, I’m hard at work with Alex from Hot On Top as we start putting together our Summer calendar. In the pipeline, we have a Jozi rooftop event, Pretoria rooftop event, boutique festival as well as a special tour to Mauritius featuring a MASSIVE South African headliner. I can’t wait!
MA: Where can people follow you on Social Media?
MA: Thanks for your time!
